Louro has an unusual advantage: in just a few minutes you can go from a sheltered, family-friendly beach inside the estuary to an open Atlantic strand with dunes, waves and Monte Louro in the background.
This guide covers the most useful beaches for a stay at LouroBeach: Praia de San Francisco, about three minutes' walk from the apartments; Area Maior, Ancoradoiro and the Monte Louro area; Lariño, already in Carnota; and the calmer estuary beaches like Bornalle and Ventín.
Last reviewed: June 2026. Main sources: Turismo de Galicia, ADEAC Blue Flag, Sergas, AEMET and MeteoGalicia.
Not all beaches in Louro suit the same plan. San Francisco is the easy beach for families and car-free days. Area Maior is landscape, walking and the Atlantic. Ancoradoiro has a wilder feel. Lariño works well for long walks or sunsets. Bornalle and Ventín offer a quieter side of the estuary.
The main difference is between estuary beaches and open Atlantic beaches. San Francisco, Bornalle and Ventín tend to be more sheltered. Area Maior, Ancoradoiro and Lariño are more exposed to wind and swell, so it is worth checking the forecast before you go.
For everyday use, the most convenient beach from LouroBeach is San Francisco: you can walk down without moving the car. For Area Maior, Ancoradoiro, Lariño, Bornalle or Ventín, the usual approach is to drive or include them in a short day trip.
In summer, the difference between walking to the beach and relying on parking is significant. That is why San Francisco is the base beach for a stay at LouroBeach, while the others work better as half-day trips.
| Plan | Recommended beach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Travelling with children | San Francisco | Sheltered, fine sand, nearby and convenient |
| Don't want to move the car | San Francisco | Walking distance from LouroBeach |
| Want scenery | Area Maior | Dunes, Monte Louro and the Atlantic horizon |
| Want to walk | Lariño or Area Maior | Wide, open strands |
| Want a wilder beach | Ancoradoiro | Small, open and set within the Monte Louro landscape |
| Looking for calmer water | Bornalle or Ventín | Sheltered beaches inside the estuary |
| Want a sunset | Area Maior or Lariño | Open light and wide views |
| Windy or rough sea | San Francisco or estuary beaches | Usually more sheltered than the Atlantic-facing beaches |
Praia de San Francisco is the most practical beach for guests staying at LouroBeach. It is about three minutes on foot from the apartments, making it easy to organise the day without a car: go down in the morning, come back for lunch or a rest, and return in the afternoon.
It is a sheltered beach inside the Muros e Noia estuary. The official Turismo de Galicia listing describes it as a fine-sand beach, 800 metres long, with a Blue Flag. In 2026, San Francisco also appears on the list of awarded beaches published by ADEAC.
Practical tip: in July and August, being able to walk from the apartment is worth more than any parking space. If you are travelling with children, a sunshade, a cool box or elderly guests, that short distance makes a real difference.

If your priority is to walk to the beach, LouroBeach is designed for exactly that: staying in San Francisco and using the beach without relying on a car.
Area Maior is the beach that explains why Louro is not just a comfortable destination but also a place with real landscape. It is an open Atlantic strand with dunes, the As Xarfas lagoon and Monte Louro in the background.
Turismo de Galicia lists Area Maior as an open beach with fine sand and 1,400 metres of length. The same body describes Monte Louro, the As Xarfas lagoon and the Area Maior dunes as a natural landscape of outstanding value.
It is a beach for walking, photography, watching the sunset or spending a long afternoon. But do not confuse it with San Francisco: Area Maior is more exposed to wind and swell. If you are travelling with young children or poor swimmers, check sea conditions beforehand and always follow the signage.

Ancoradoiro is a small beach within the Monte Louro area. Turismo de Galicia lists it as an open beach with fine sand and 100 metres of length.
It cannot compete with San Francisco for convenience or Area Maior for size, but it is worth a natural stop. It fits well if you are exploring Monte Louro, the lagoon or the pine-forest surroundings.
Treat it more as a half-day stop than as the main swimming beach for families with young children. Its value is in the setting, not the facilities.

Lariño is not in the municipality of Muros but in Carnota; however, it is close enough to Louro to include in a practical guide for LouroBeach guests. According to Turismo de Galicia, it is an open beach with fine sand and 1,500 metres of length.
It is a good option for a change of scenery on a longer stay. It works well for walking, photography or arriving at sunset. As with other open beaches, check wind and sea conditions before treating it as a swimming beach with children.

Further into the estuary, the landscape changes. The sea feels calmer and the atmosphere is less touristy than at San Francisco or Area Maior.
Turismo de Galicia lists Bornalle o Mondelo as a sheltered beach with fine sand and 800 metres of length. It also lists Ventín, in the Abelleira area, as a sheltered beach with fine sand and 250 metres.
They are not the most well-known beaches for first-time visitors to Louro, but that is precisely why they belong in a travel guide: they show another side of the municipality of Muros, more connected to the estuary, small villages and unhurried afternoons.

At the beaches of Louro and Muros, checking whether it is sunny is not always enough. Wind, tides and sea conditions can significantly affect the experience, especially at open beaches like Area Maior, Ancoradoiro or Lariño.
For the weather forecast you can check AEMET for Muros or the specific forecast for Praia de San Francisco. For sea state and tides, MeteoGalicia is a useful reference in Galicia. For health information, Sergas publishes data on bathing zones, water analysis results and health classification.
The signage at each beach always takes priority. If there is a flag, lifeguard instructions or local warnings, these must override any guide.
If you are travelling with children, the simplest choice is San Francisco. It is close to LouroBeach, sheltered and lets you return to the apartment without turning every outing into an expedition.
Area Maior can be wonderful for a walk or a sunset, but I would not use it as the first swimming option with children if there is wind, swell or onshore waves. Lariño and Ancoradoiro also depend more on Atlantic conditions.
Bornalle or Ventín can be calm alternatives inside the estuary, especially for a different kind of afternoon, though you should expect fewer tourist facilities than at San Francisco.
Louro works well as a base because it does not force you to choose between comfort and scenery. San Francisco is walkable from LouroBeach and handles the easy beach days. Area Maior, Monte Louro and Ancoradoiro provide the natural and Atlantic side. Muros is a few minutes by car for a stroll, a meal or a visit to the historic centre.
For a stay of several days, this combination is more useful than basing yourself somewhere with only one beach. You can spend the morning at San Francisco, have lunch at the apartment and head to Area Maior, Muros or the inner estuary in the afternoon.
That flexibility is especially noticeable with children, large groups or trips where the weather changes quickly.
This guide uses institutional sources for beach data, coordinates, characteristics, water quality, forecasts and awards. Practical recommendations are written from a tourist perspective, without inventing opening hours or unverified services.

Praia de San Francisco. It is sheltered, has fine sand, is close to LouroBeach and lets you organise the day without a car.
Praia de San Francisco, about three minutes on foot.
Yes, when the sea is calm, but it is an open Atlantic beach. It is worth checking wind, swell and signage before swimming, especially with children.
Yes, but it is not as quick as San Francisco. If you are carrying a sunshade, children or a cool box, it is usually more practical to drive and walk from the signed access points.
Area Maior and Lariño are the best options because of their open orientation and wide views.
No. Lariño is in Carnota, but it is close enough to Louro to make sense as a nearby beach for longer stays.
On the Sergas bathing zone information page, in the analytical results published by Sergas, and in the NÁYADE system of the Ministry of Health.
It depends on the wind direction, but San Francisco and the more sheltered estuary beaches are usually more comfortable than Area Maior or Lariño.
Two apartments in San Francisco, Louro, sleeping up to 8 guests each. Praia de San Francisco is about three minutes on foot; Muros, Monte Louro and the rest of the beaches are short trips away.
